What is Mystery? Mystery is a church. But it’s more than simply a place it’s a people. An authentic community wishing to honor God with our whole lives sharing the love of Christ throughout the city, the neighborhoods, the schools and the workplaces where we find ourselves. We know for some people going anywhere for the first time can be a bit overwhelming. Here are some answers to some of the frequently asked questions about our church to hopefully give you a better picture of what Mystery looks like week to week and address issues that might be important to you.
When and where do you Meet? We gather each Sunday evening at 5:30pm to worship at Historic First Presbyterian Church in Webb City, Mo. Check the Times and Locations link for more information and directions.
When should I arrive? If it's your first visit then it's probably best to turn up by 5:15pm. Many people gather before the service to hang out and catch up on their week. It’s a great time to meet new people.
Why do you meet at night? Two reasons: To connect with different people, mainly those distant and detached from church and secondly because we are a new church and space is hard to find. This is what we have for now. Our hope is to add a morning service in the future as God creates opportunities for us.
What kind of people make up Mystery? Mystery is a diverse community of people seeking to know and love God and live as family with by the power of the gospel. Practically speaking, this means some of us are just checking out Christianity for the first time, while others have been in church their whole lives. There are people of all ages, diversity and backgrounds each with their own unique story. Everyone is welcome.
What kind of church is Mystery? We are an interdenominational church, meaning we are not affiliated with one denomination. We are a church supported by and filled with people from many diverse denominational backgrounds.
What if I'm not used to going to church? You are the reason we started Mystery. We long to be a comfortable place for those who are curious about God but have never felt comfortable in church. We want Mystery to be a place where you can learn and wrestle with who God is and what He wants for you. It's okay if you don't have it all figured out yet, as a matter of fact we respect that. At Mystery it’s ok to not be ok. We are neither a perfect place nor perfect people.
What is the worship service like? Mystery has always been a place where we try to keep it very simple. It's relaxed, but focused. We do not put on a show to attract people to God. We trust that Jesus is enough. We teach from the Bible, pray, meditate, reflect, sing songs and respond. The music is sometimes new, sometimes old- always meaningful. We respond to God by taking communion together each week. Sundays are for celebration. The service is not the only part of lives. It is a chance to worship God and enjoy him for who he is and what he has accomplished throughout the week.
What does the pastor talk about? The sermons at Mystery are always practical in nature. We believe that God wants to be involved in our everyday lives, so we present the timeless truths of the Bible in a format that's easy to understand, even if you've never been to church. Typically, we go through one book of the Bible in its entirety so we may fully understand God's truth in context. We believe that if you teach the bible eventually you will touch on all of life. From time to time we do address specific topics of life, theology and need. Our goal is to know and love God more by making God's unchanging truth accessible without watering it down.
What should I wear? This is easy. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. There is no need to dress up to try and be someone that you're not. Just be you. Whether you come as a suited business man or in shorts and flip-flops that’s fine with us. There is no set dress code, but the attire is typically casual.
What about my kids? We love kids! Mystery offers caring childcare for infants and toddlers. For school aged children we have creative, bible centered and age appropriate teaching during our worship service. We see kids as vital participating members of the church, not second class citizens to be entertained. Mystery encourages kids 5th grade and up to participate with parents by sharing in the worship service along side the adults.
Can I invite my friends? Please do. We are here for people, especially those who are curious about Christianity or who are seeking to belong to a community of believers.
Is it just Sundays? Absolutely not! We offer many opportunities to connect, learn and share. Mystery has Community Groups that meet during the week around the area for study, prayer, food and fun. Groups are a great way to get to know others in the church, to be real with others and to live life closely. There are also chances to serve the city through social action, mercy ministries and outreach efforts. Mystery is also a supporter of the arts, local businesses and education. We strive to connect culturally with the area through varied monthly gatherings which facilitate community, conversation and innovation.
